The Jefferson County Extension Service, 500 Idaho St., has flags available for the 2012 growing season.
This is a quick and inexpensive way to prevent misapplication of pesticides and warn of technology that is sensitive to potential off-target drift on crops, according to a spokesman. The objective of the “Flag the Technology” program is to significantly reduce herbicide application errors.
The “Flag the Technology” idea is simple. Colored bicycle-type flags that represent a particular herbicide technology are placed at a field entrance or other location visible by ground and air. The color of the flag identifies the technology in that particular field.
The following colors are approved for the various technologies:
• Red — Conventional
Independent reporting for Pine Bluff & Jefferson County since 1879.
• White — Round-up Ready
• Bright Green — Liberty Link
• Bright Yellow — Clearfield
For the 2012 growing season the Soybean Promotion Board is funding the program, which means that the flags will be available for soybean growers only.
A limited number of flags is available at the Extension office. For those who would like to participate or want more information, call 870-534-1033 or visit the website at www.aragriculture.org
