Fish’s streak ends in Cowboys’ win again over Lions

STILLWATER, Okla. — Oklahoma State improved to 23-0 against Arkansas-Pine Bluff after beating the Golden Lions 6-4 on Wednesday for the Cowboys’ fifth straight win.

However, Zach Fish went 0-for-2 at the plate, ending his 14-game hitting streak, which was the longest in the Big 12.

The Cowboys (11-7) scored what proved to be the winning runs in the sixth inning.

UAPB (1-16-1) took an early lead with a run in the second inning against OSU starter Blake Barnes. Sean Samsa tripled with one out, and an RBI groundout by Lucas Fortino gave the Golden Lions a 1-0 advantage.

But the Cowboys erased that deficit in the bottom of the inning as the first of Jones’ RBI doubles tied the game at 1-1 before Robbie Rea scored the go-ahead run on a balk.

OSU fell behind again in the third, with a two-RBI triple by Soloman Williams putting the visitors up by a 3-2 margin, but once again the Cowboys answered. In the bottom of the third, Fish followed a triple by Jared Womack with a game-tying sacrifice fly, and Ginther followed that with his first homer of the day over the left field wall.

The Cowboys’ lead held until the sixth. Williams led off the top of the inning with a double and advanced to third on a groundout. After Kyle Bagnell replaced Barnes on the mound and got the second out of the inning on a popup, Wheeland came on and gave up a bloop single into shallow center field that tied the score at 4-4.

OSU escaped without further damage and regained the lead for good in the bottom of the inning. Ginther led off with another round tripper to left, and three batters later, Jones brought Weidenaar home with the Cowboys’ sixth run.

Watson Chapel graduate Michael Newby pitched one inning in relief and took the loss for the Lions. He gave up two runs on two hits, walked one and struck out one.
