First United begins program to aid Alzheimer’s patients, caregivers

First United Methodist Church, 200 W. Sixth Ave., is beginning a new community program entitled The Caring Place, to assist caregivers and people with Alzheimer’s disease.

In order to provide assistance, training, education, support and understanding, the congregation is stepping forward with this program.

“The focus and purpose of this program is simply to improve the quality of the lives of our friends and neighbors who are struggling with the daily challenges of Alzheimer’s and other related dementias,” spokeswoman Linda Nickerson said in a news release.

New caregiver support groups are being organized. After the first of the year, a caregiver workshop will be provided free to caregivers.

There is a plan for a Memory Café and a Candle Lighting Memorial Service. During early summer 2017, The Caring Place will open a day respite center for people with Alzheimer’s or related dementias.
