FAMU women overpower UAPB

Two days after falling short in a thriller, the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff women’s basketball team never got going Saturday.

Florida A&M never trailed as it defeated UAPB 84-50 at the Al Lawson Center in Tallahassee, Florida.

After shooting 50 percent from the field on Thursday at Bethune-Cookman, including a 63-percent clip in the first half, UAPB (2-13, 0-5 SWAC) made just four of 17 shots in the first quarter Saturday and went on to finish 36.7 percent from the field.

The Lady Lions made 1 of 9 3-point attempts, 11 of 27 layups and 5 of 11 free throws.

Florida A&M (6-10, 3-2) led 5-4 three minutes into the game before pulling away with a 13-0 run. FAMU led 21-9 after the first quarter and ballooned the lead to 43-20 by halftime, finishing the half on a 12-3 run. UAPB never threatened in the second half.

The Lady Rattlers dominated the boards, outrebounding UAPB 52-27, including a 19-8 edge on the offensive glass.

Both teams turned the ball over, but FAMU took advantage more than UAPB. The Lady Rattlers outscored UAPB 28-18 off turnovers and 32-7 in transition.

FAMU shot 10 of 19 from 3, helping the Lady Rattlers pull away.

Three FAMU players tied for the scoring lead with 14 points apiece: D’Mya Griffin, Eve Alexander and Saige Glover. D’Arrah Allen led UAPB with 11 points, followed by Kristyna Boyd with 10.

Before Saturday, the Lady Lions had not allowed a non-Power Four team to exceed 70 points, a mark FAMU crushed.
