Extension Service to present vegetable production clinic

An area commercial vegetable production clinic is scheduled for 9 a.m., Wednesday, March 15, at the Jefferson County Cooperative Extension Service, 500 S. Idaho St.

A complimentary noon luncheon will be held featuring Tracy Dunbar, professor of agriculture at the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff. She will discuss vegetable production budgets.

Although targeted audiences are commercial growers, those selling at farmers markets and Master Gardeners, the clinic is open to anyone interested in gardening, said Henry English, director of the Small Farm Program at UAPB.

Topics include disease, weed and insect management in legumes, cucurbits, brassica (greens, sprouts and cabbage), solanaceous (peppers and tomoatoes) vegetables and sweet potatoes; Farm Service Agency updates; and production information on growing cucumbers, squash, sweet potatoes, southern peas, tomatoes, greens and peppers.

Presenters are University of Arkansas Cooperative Extension specialists and faculty including Nick Seiter, assistant professor and entomologist; Terry N. Spurlock, Extension plant pathologist; and Chris Rouse, graduate research assistant. UAPB presenters are English and Shaun Francis, Extension horticulturist.
