Extension office to host vegetable workshop

A vegetable production workshop is scheduled for Wednesday, March 16, at the University of Arkansas Jefferson County Cooperative Extension Office, 500 S. Idaho St. The workshop is for 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., followed by a complimentary lunch.

The workshop is sponsored by the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff Small Farm Program. The luncheon speaker, Tracy Dunbar, UAPB associate professor of agriculture, will discuss results from a vegetable marketing study conducted in Jefferson County.

Although aimed at area commercial growers, those selling at farmers markets, local gardeners and Master Gardeners are welcome to attend, said Henry English, director of the UAPB Small Farm Program.

Pest control, including diseases, insects and weeds; variety selection; soil fertility and irrigation will be discussed. Vegetables covered include cucurbits (squash, watermelons and cucumbers), bell peppers, greens, southern peas and sweet potatoes.

Contact Kellye Luckett at 575-7226 to preregister and be included in the meal count or if you have special needs.
