The Jefferson County Extension Homemakers are selling fresh 2018 shelled pecans and peanuts during its annual fundraiser.
“This is the association’s only fundraiser and it provides funding for leadership training, community service projects and educational programs for Jefferson and surrounding counties,” according to a news release.
Prices this year are: 5 pound cloth bag of shelled peanuts — $17; 1 pound chocolate double dip peanuts — $9; 5 pound box, shelled fancy pecan halves — $50; and 30 pound box, shelled fancy pecan halves — $290.
The pecans and peanuts will be available for pick up before Thanksgiving. Extension Homemakers will notify customers when the pecans arrive.
“Pecans are now considered a healthy food choice because of their Omega-6 fatty acids. Recent studies recommend 1.5 ounces nuts, including pecans, daily for a healthy brain and heart,” according to the release.
Independent reporting for Pine Bluff & Jefferson County since 1879.
“Freezing will retain the freshness of the pecans. Toasting before freezing will save time when baking and provides a readily available daily snack. Pecans are a versatile food that can be spiced, sugared, salted, placed in salads, vegetables, soups, meat casseroles, dips and sauces,” according to the release.
Extension Homemakers will be accepting cash orders at the Extension office between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Monday, Oct. 8, to Friday, Oct. 12.
People who didn’t receive an order form in the mail, may call the Jefferson County Cooperative Extension Service at 870-534-1033 for a form to be mailed to them.
Pecan and peanut orders must be paid for by Wednesday, Oct. 31. Make checks payable to Jefferson County Extension Homemakers and mail to Jefferson County Extension Homemakers, care of Delores Kelley, P.O. Box 21062, White Hall, AR, 71602.
