Election overseers disallow provisional voters’ ballots

The Jefferson County Election C0mmission, meeting Wednesday afternoon at its 123 Main St. headquarters, voted unanimously to disallow two of three provisional ballots that were scheduled for possible discussion during an unattended public hearing.

The hearing had been the primary item of new business on the meeting’s agenda. The disapprovals included a second ballot that had been requested by an absentee voter, and the ballot of an individual who voted at the wrong polling place. A third questioned ballot – one cast by a voter who activated his registration during the May 22 preferential primary – was approved.

In other business, the commission unanimously endorsed ballot styles for the June 12 runoff election, established individual compensation amounts for staff training, and counted two previously-sealed overseas military ballots.

The commission will meet at 1 p.m. Thursday at Pine Bluff National Bank’s Watson Chapel branch to possibly count additional overseas ballots, and discuss a matter of two voters casting double ballots.

Meanwhile, the panel is preparing for a 1-5 p.m. training session for election judges June 6 at the commission headquarters.
