DST members attend regional conference

Members of the Pine Bluff Alumnae and Delta Eta chapters of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. recently attended the Southwest Region Conference held in Albuquerque, N.M. -“The Duke City”.

The conference convened on August 7-10. The Southwest Region is comprised of Arkansas, Louisiana, New Mexico, Texas and Jamacia. The credentials report more than 1,400 people attended. The theme for the conference was “Uncompromising Commitment to Communities: Service, Leadership, Empowerment.”

The members of the sorority were afforded very informative plenary sessions, a plethora of excellent workshops and several great luncheon sessions.

The members of the sorority left the conference feeling very empowered with good information that will make them a more effective chapter member and a great asset to the membership. At this conference new regional officers and new regional committee members were named to serve for the next four years.

Members of the Pine Bluff Alumnae delegation to the Regional Conference were Kelly D. Bryant, chapter president and the voting delegate; Shelia Brown, vice president and the alternate delegate; Phaedra Thompson, financial secretary; LaWanda Johnson, assistant financial secretary; Nicolette Laurent, treasurer; Mae Hawkins, assistant treasurer; Myrtle Withers, chapter chaplain and Jonesetta Lassiter, chapter journalist. Other members in attendance include Dorothy Chatman Brown, Shirley Jacob, Joann Davis, Lucille Jasper, Connie Jackson, Dana Mooney, Charlene Kelly, immediate past president; Renisha Ward, Johanna Creal-Ward, Fran Dalton, Felicia Cooper, Catherine Laurent, Pearly Stepps, Tonia Ailsworth, Monica Bones, Stephanie Bobo, Stephanie Brown, adviser for Delta Eta Chapter and a member of the Conference Evaluations Committee; and Betty Lacy, member of the Conference Credentials Committee and regional co-chair for social action.

The National Convention will be held in Houston, Texas in July 2015 and the next Regional Conference will be held in San Antonio, Texas in 2016.

Tiffany Kidd served as the regional representative and Gwen Grant served as the interim regional director for the Southwest Region. Paulette C. Walker is president of the Grand Chapter. The Grand Chapter is comprised of 1,000 chapters across the United States to include Alaska and Hawaii; Okinawa and Tokyo, Japan; Bermuda, the Bahamas, Germany, St. Croix and St. Thomas in the Virgin Islands, and the Republic of Korea.
