Drew County NAACP sets youth summit

The Drew County Branch of the NAACP will sponsor a youth leadership summit starting at 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 5, at Holmes Chapel Presbyterian Church at Monticello. Youth from area high schools are invited to attend.

The keynote speaker will be Angela Carroll Jackson, associate dean/director of the Office of University and Community at the University of Central Arkansas at Conway. She is also a Monticello native.

Participants will also include representatives from various colleges and universities, officials from the Arkansas State Police, Army ROTC and others.

This youth summit is an effort to get more young people involved in the NAACP’s Afro-Academic, Cultural, Technological and Scientific Olympics.

ACT-SO is a yearlong achievement program designed to recruit, stimulate and encourage high academic and cultural achievement among African-American high school students.

ACT-SO includes 29 competitions in STEM, humanities, business, and performing, visual and culinary arts.

Registrations is $25 per student before Sunday, July 2, and guarantees participants to receive T-shirts and novelties. The deadline for all registrations is Friday, July 28.
