Disturbance reported at Varner prison unit

According to Department of Corrections spokesman Solomon Graves, at approximately 10:30 p.m. Wednesday, correctional officers at the Varner Unit in Grady began responding to a disturbance in one housing area within the unit.

Approximately a dozen inmates were involved in breaking barracks windows and setting small trash fires within the one housing area/barracks.

Graves said correctional officers were able to regain control of the situation. One correctional officer received a minor injury that did not require hospitalization. No inmates were injured during the department’s response.

He said department personnel are currently conducting an investigation into the incident to try and determine what triggered it.
