District 1 has newcomers seeking JP seat

The Tuesday Joint Party Preferential Primary Election will see newcomers vying for a seat on the Quorum Court.

In District 1, candidates are Democrats Morris Caldwell and Garland Trice. Alfred Carroll, the current seat holder on the county’s legislative body, is running for county judge.

Caldwell said he decided to seek the seat after learning that Carroll was running for judge and because he wants to be a part of the solution to improving the Pine Bluff area. He said he and his wife, Kanisher Caldwell, are the founders of a youth outreach organization, Save Our City, and she has formed a youth choir, organizes skate parties and other activities to involve youth.

“I wanted to be more involved in bringing our community back and I can bring a youthful perspective to the court,” the insurance salesman said.

Although it is called the quorum court and the officeholders are justices of the peace, it really is the county’s legislative body.

“I’m not out to reinvent the wheel, but I think I can bring some good youthful knowledge,” Caldwell said.

Trice, his opponent, did not respond to attempts to reach him, including a note left at his address.
