Dermott resident and community volunteer Faye Parker recently donated books to Julia Boatner’s fifth-grade class at Dermott Elementary School.
The book, “Johnny Was His Name: The Boy Who Grew Up To Become John H. Johnson,” was presented to each student recently to supplement their learning about history and support reading comprehension and writing, according to a news release.
Johnson is a native of Arkansas City. Written by Friends of John H. Johnson Museum, the historical nonfiction shares the story of a 9-year-old Johnny Johnson living on top of the Arkansas Levee during the 1927 Flood.
He would later become John H. Johnson, the founder of Johnson Publishing Co. as well as Ebony and Jet magazines.
Free multi-level lesson plans and activities aligned with the book are available for educators online at www.johnhjohnsonmuseum.org.
