The Pine Bluff chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma Society International learned about mats for the homeless at their March meeting.
Central Baptist Church member Shari Taylor explained how the Eager Hands Ministry couples women with craft skills to meet community needs.
The women crochet mats from around 450 plastic bags that measure 3 feet by 6 feet. Taylor said that the mats are appreciated by the homeless because they are light weight, easily washable and resistant to insects.
Jefferson County Recycling Public Outreach Director Alamae Harris gave a presentation on how recycling plays an important part in conservation. She said that throwing away a single can instead of recycling it is like pouring out six ounces of gasoline.
Harris said that on a larger scale recycling could translate into huge reductions in our energy costs. Harris said that it costs more energy to manufacture a brand new aluminum can than it does to recycle 20 aluminum cans.
Independent reporting for Pine Bluff & Jefferson County since 1879.
Harris said that Jefferson County opened its Recycling Collection Center in September 2014 at 1800 E. Harding Ave. She said that the center processed 3,700 tons of tires last year; diverted 400 tons of cardboard and paper products as well as 20 tons of plastic and 60 tons of E-waste.
The host for the March meeting was Denney Jordan.
