DC, SC get regional hoops, baseball

The road to the 2A state baseball championship really will go through Woodlawn this year.

Woodlawn was awarded hosting rights to the 2014 2A tournament, as the Arkansas Activities Association announced its sites for postseason sports events during the calendar year. The state baseball and softball events in all seven classifications are scheduled for May 15-17.

A bidding process conducted by the AAA was used to determine the sites.

Meanwhile, Monticello will play host to the 4A state softball tournament, scheduled for the same dates. The school was the site for the 2012 5A baseball tournament.

More immediately, one Southeast Arkansas school will host a regional basketball tournament. Drew Central was selected as the site for the 3A Region 4, to be held Feb. 26-March 1. The region includes the 8-3A Conference.

Nashville will host the 4A South Region, which includes the 8-4A Conference, and Clinton is the site for the 4A East Region, which includes the 2-4A. Those also will be held Feb. 26-March 1.

The state basketball tournament sites (March 4-8) selected are: Conway in 7A, Jonesboro in 6A, Alma in 5A, Lonoke in 4A, Charleston in 3A, Hampton in 2A and North Arkansas Community College (in Harrison) in 1A, hosted by Jasper and Alpena. Finals in all classes will be held the following week at Barton Coliseum in Little Rock.

In baseball, Star City will welcome the 4A South Region, scheduled for May 9-12. Those same dates, the 4A East Region will be held in Lonoke, the 3A Region 4 will be contested at Genoa Central and the 2A South is set for Parkers Chapel.

Other state baseball tournament sites are: Burns Park (in North Little Rock) in 7A, Benton in 6A, Jacksonville in 5A, Nashville in 4A, Harrison Parks (hosted by Bergman) in 3A, and Mountain Home (hosted by Lead Hill) in 1A. Benton, Jacksonville, Harrison Parks and Mountain Home also will have their respective state softball tournaments, with 7A tourney held in Conway, and the 2A in Marked Tree. Izard County is the host for the 1A softball tourney.

Other notable state sites include: in soccer, Fayetteville (7A boys), Bentonville (7A girls), Russellville (6A), Harrison (5A) and Central Arkansas Christian (4A); and in track and field, Cabot (7A), Russellville (6A), Harrison (5A), Nashville (4A) Morrilton (3A), and Green Forest (1A, hosted by Alpena). There was no bid for the 2A meet.

The Meet of Champions is scheduled for May 17 at Russellville. The state Decathlon and Heptathlon are May 21-22 at Cabot.
