The Pine Bluff-John McAlmont Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution met April 15 at Lakeside United Methodist Church Center. Regent Susan Over led the group in the DAR rituals.

Carlton Saffa, chief marketing officer for Saracen Casino Resort in Pine Bluff, presented the program on “Chief Saracen and the Quapaw Indians.”

After the program, the regular business meeting began with Secretary Rita Cash announcing that the minutes of the last meeting had been approved, according to a news release.

Scholarship Chairman Sue Smith reported she had received two applications for the Southeast Arkansas College scholarship, but neither applicant met the qualifications to receive the award. Smith made a motion to add the amount of the scholarship to next year’s award. The motion carried with unanimous approval from the members.

Over reported that she had asked the executive board for approval to use funds from the chapter to cover part of the expense of a catered luncheon planned for May 20. Donations will also be furnished by the members.

The luncheon is a celebration and membership drive, and will be in honor of Rex Nelson, author, columnist and senior editor of the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette. Nelson will present the program after the luncheon.

Sharon Wyatt, a delegate to the state conference in Little Rock, recently reported on an event. Four people from the chapter were awarded Certificates of Appreciation. They were Melody Berry as Outstanding Service as Wataseka District Treasurer, 2022-2025; Sarah Gwin — Arkansas DAR Scholarship; Sophia Gwin — Stevenson-Westbrook Scholarship; Rita Cash — Outstanding Service in American Heritage “Johnny Cash Program.”

The Gwin sisters served as pages for the conference. The chapter received five additional awards.

The hostesses for the meeting were Janet Scherm and Jerrie Townsend.
