DAR hears of Pine Bluff, Civil War

The Pine Bluff-John McAlmont Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution met Oct. 15 in the center at Lakeside United Methodist Church. Regent Susan Over led the group in the DAR ritual.

The speaker, Thomas DeBlack of Conway, was introduced by Lela R. Murray. DeBlack is a retired history professor from Arkansas Tech University in Russellville and Hendrix College in Conway, according to a news release.

The topic of his program was “Arkansas: Pine Bluff and the Civil War.” A prominent figure from Pine Bluff, Hercules King Cannon White was a Civil War soldier and guerrilla who also participated in the Brooks-Baxter War during Reconstruction. He was a six-term mayor of Pine Bluff. He was born in Kentucky in 1845 and died in Pine Bluff in 1907, according to the release.

Also during the DAR meeting, Secretary Rita Cash called the roll, and read the minutes of the last meeting. The minutes were approved.

DeeLois Lawrence, treasurer, gave the report of income and expenses, before presenting the proposed budget for Sept. 1, 2024, to Aug. 31, 2025. After discussion, the budget was approved by the members.

Over reminded members of the eighth annual Veterans’ Shoebox Drive. Gifts will be delivered the week of Dec. 2-6 to organizations, agencies, and facilities that serve veterans in Arkansas, including veterans’ medical facilities and veterans’ homes.

Over mentioned several dates to be observed by members including the Revolutionary War Grave Marking, Nov. 2, and Veteran’s Day, Nov. 11.

The meeting was adjourned after the program. The hostesses were Sabrina Gwin and Over.
