Courtney Crutchfield’s transfer to the University of Arkansas marks the return of a native son, according to his high school football coach.

Crutchfield’s signing, which the Razorbacks announced Wednesday, gives the team’s local fanbase an instant boost for the 2025 season, Pine Bluff High School coach Micheal Williams said Thursday. Crutchfield spent this season at the University of Missouri, settling for a redshirt after appearing in just two games with the Tigers.

“We talked two weeks ago about it,” Williams said, asked about any initial discussions between him and Crutchfield about transferring. “Of course, I reached out to (Arkansas coach Sam) Pittman and started the process of what we were going to do. I didn’t want him to jump in (the NCAA portal) without a landing spot. We talked this out.”

Student-athletes place their names in the NCAA transfer portal, a database that is not visible to the general public but indicates to potential coaches their intent to transfer. Saturday marks the final day of the 19-day December transfer window; the portal will reopen from April 16-25.

Crutchfield orally committed to Arkansas at first but signed with Missouri last December along with classmate Austyn Dendy. The two helped the Zebras reach the 2023 5A state semifinals in football and won back-to-back state championships in basketball (2023-24).

Attempts to reach Crutchfield were unsuccessful, but he said last December he felt he had rushed into orally committing to Arkansas and thought he had a chance to contribute right away at Missouri.

As it turns out, the Tigers had a loaded wide receiver room, led by senior Theo Wease (809 yards, three touchdowns on 55 receptions). Crutchfield did not record any statistics.

“One of the main things with Courtney coming back, it wasn’t anything wrong with Mizzou,” Williams said. “He just wanted more of a hometown feel as far as being closer to home and getting to put on for his state. It wasn’t about Mizzou and playing time. They had three receivers ready to go to the NFL.”

Crutchfield enrolled at Missouri with his share of accolades, ranked No. 51 among all prospects in the country and the top recruit in Arkansas by 247Sports.com, and earning a spot in the All-American Bowl.

Williams said Dendy will remain at Missouri along with tight end Jordon Harris, who graduated from Pine Bluff in 2023 and was part of the first basketball reign. Harris had 4 catches for 34 yards this season, while Dendy recorded no stats.

Crutchfield signed with Arkansas days before Missouri (9-3) takes on the University of Iowa (8-4) in the Music City Bowl in Nashville, Tenn., on Monday. Arkansas (6-6) will play Texas Tech (8-4) at 6 p.m. Friday in the Liberty Bowl in Memphis.

But the optimism of local Hog fans for 2025 is apparently higher with Crutchfield’s arrival in Fayetteville.

“It instantly boosts them,” Williams said. “Everybody’s reposting it. Courtney is their own son, and that’s what he thinks of Arkansas. We love the fact he’s coming back and helping the team soon as he touches the ground.”
