Cotton Bowl Flashback — 2000

Arkansas 27, Texas 6

Arkansas made its first trip to the Cotton Bowl under coach Houston Nutt, meeting former Southwest Conference rival Texas on Jan. 1, 2000. It proved to be one of the most memorable bowl performances in school history.

The teams met for the first time since the 1991 season, when the Razorbacks picked up a 14-13 win before departing for the Southeastern Conference. Arkansas had bragging rights in the first bowl meeting between the teams, too, thanks to a record-breaking performance from its defense.

Arkansas sacked Texas quarterbacks eight times and limited the Longhorns to 185 yards. It included minus-27 rushing yards, which is a Cotton Bowl record. The smothering group kept Texas out of the end zone, limiting it to field goals in the second and third quarters.

The game was tied 3-3 at halftime when Arkansas broke it open. Quarterback Clint Stoerner flipped a pass out in the flat to running back Cedric Cobbs, who took it 30 yards for a touchdown. Texas closed the gap to 10-6 with a field goal later in the quarter. Then the rout began.

Arkansas scored 17 points in the fourth quarter to roll to a convincing win. Running back Michael Jenkins had a 42-yard touchdown run early in the quarter. Cobbs added a 37-yard run a few minutes later. And the Razorbacks tacked on a field goal late to secure the final margin.

Cobbs was named the offensive player of the game with 128 total yards and two touchdowns. D.J. Cooper was named defensive player of the game with two sacks.
