LSU 14, Arkansas 7
Arkansas returned to Dallas for the 1966 Cotton Bowl after wrapping up its second straight undefeated regular season. With it, the defending national champions had a chance to win a second straight title under Frank Broyles after claiming the Football Writers Association of America crown in 1964.
But the Razorbacks had to get past LSU, which hadn’t lost to Arkansas since 1929. The Tigers were 11-0-1 during the stretch of dominance, which included the scoreless tie against the Hogs in the 1947 Cotton Bowl.
Arkansas started the 1966 game strong, putting together an 11-play, 87-yard drive in the first quarter that was capped by Bobby Crockett’s touchdown pass from quarterback John Brittenum to take a 7-0 lead. But kicker Ronny South missed a field goal a little later and LSU marched 80 yards downfield to tie the game with a three-yard touchdown run from Joe LaBruzzo.
The Razorbacks suffered a critical blow the next play from scrimmage, when Brittenum had to temporarily leave the game because of a shoulder injury. Arkansas fumbled the football a few plays later and LSU turned the mistake into another touchdown run by LaBruzzo.
Independent reporting for Pine Bluff & Jefferson County since 1879.
It was all LSU needed to win. Arkansas made one final push to tie the game, reaching the LSU 24 when time ran out. But its school-record 22-game win streak ended. So did its hopes of claiming another national title.
The teams would not meet again until the 1992 season, when the Razorbacks finally beat LSU in the first Southeastern Conference game between the schools.
