Cotton Bowl Flashback — 1961

Duke 7, Arkansas 6

Arkansas, which won a share of the Southwest Conference title and played in the Gator Bowl to end the 1959 season, grabbed the outright conference crown again in 1960. This time it meant the first of three trips to the Cotton Bowl in a six-year span under coach Frank Broyles.

The seventh-ranked Razorbacks, who were led by All-American receiver Lance Alworth, played No. 10 Duke in the 25th anniversary of the bowl game.

And after a scoreless first half, the Razorbacks appeared to be on their way to their first Cotton Bowl win after Alworth returned a punt 49 yards for a touchdown to give the Hogs a 6-0 lead.

But the Razorbacks were once again done in by a fourth-quarter touchdown in the Cotton Bowl, when Duke quarterback Don Altman led his team on a 73-yard scoring drive to win the game. Altman’s final pass on the drive was a 9-yard touchdown to end Tee Moorman, giving the Blue Devils a 7-6 edge.

Alworth was named the game’s outstanding back after totaling 33 rushing yards, 41 receiving yards, 50 kick return yards and the 49-yard punt return touchdown. But his efforts weren’t enough to help Arkansas win the game. The Razorbacks fell to 0-2-1 in its three Cotton Bowl appearances.
