Cotton Bowl Flashback — 1947

Arkansas 0, LSU 0

Editor’s Note: Arkansas will play in the Cotton Bowl for the 12th time when it meets Kansas State on Jan. 6 on Cowboys Stadium. The bowl game has been an important part of Arkansas’ football history and, to mark this year’s trip, the Arkansas News Bureau will take a brief look back at the other 11 appearances over the days leading up to kickoff.

Arkansas, which was in its first season with John Barnhill as head coach, won at least a share of the Southwest Conference championship for the third time (although the 1933 championship was vacated) and was rewarded with its first trip to play in the Cotton Bowl.

The Razorbacks were greeted by snow, ice and temperatures in the mid-20s on gameday, battling LSU to the first scoreless tie in the bowl’s history. LSU — led by quarterback Y.A. Tittle — dominated much of the game, outgaining Arkansas 271-54. The Tigers also had 15 first down to the Razorbacks’ one, moving inside the 10-yard line five times in the first half.

But the Razorbacks repeatedly stood strong on defense when they had to, keeping the Tigers off the scoreboard. Clyde Scott made the play of the game in the third quarter, stopping LSU receiver Jeff Odom at the one-yard line to keep the Tigers scoreless. End Alton Baldwin also played a key role in the tie, being named the outstanding lineman of the Cotton Bowl.

Arkansas finished the season 6-3-2 under Barnhill, who would coach for three more seasons before concentrating on his duties as the school’s athletic director. It would be eight more years before the Razorbacks returned to Dallas to play in the Cotton Bowl.
