Drew County MLK event begins today
The Drew County Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration kick-off event will be held today with a “Day of Service.”
The neighborhood cleanup in Monticello and Wilmar will be held from 10 a.m. to 12 noon and the community is asked to participate, according to a news release.
Monticello residents can meet at 10 a.m. at Jordan Park and Wilmar residents can meet at 10 a.m. on Johnson Street in Wilmar. Volunteers are invited to lunch from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. at the Monticello Branch Library.
Coordinators, Drew County NAACP membership committee, Drew County Growth and Drew County Sisters of Excellence, planned the cleanup.

Farm to School Institute seeks applicants
The Arkansas Department of Agriculture is accepting applications for the Arkansas Farm to School Institute until March 1.
The department’s Farm to School and Early Childhood Education Program will select up to 15 schools to participate in the program for the 2024-2025 school year.
The institute is a year-long professional development program that offers training, resources, and technical assistance to school educators, administrators, school nutrition directors, cafeteria staff, local farmers, and community partners. The program is open to schools looking to expand on existing farm to school efforts throughout the state.
Selected schools are invited to a summer retreat to create a collaborative farm to school action plan. Teams will meet throughout the year to discuss action plan progress and provide feedback to department staff and coaches. In collaboration with the Arkansas Department of Education, selected schools will receive a $1,000 implementation grant to execute their action plans. SNHU names locals to President’s List
Southern New Hampshire University at Manchester, N.H., named area students to the Fall 2023 President’s List.
They include: Hayley Funderburg of White Hall, Jennifer Baxter of Pine Bluff, Morgan Fleming of Dermott, Tammy Newburn of Dumas, Roxanna Clay of Hermitage, Myla Rawls of New Edinburg, and Nicholas Heady of Grapevine.
The fall terms run from September to December. Full-time undergraduate students who have earned a minimum grade-point average of 3.700 and above for the term are named to the President’s List, according to a news release.
SNHU names locals to Dean’s List
Southern New Hampshire University at Manchester, N.H., named area students to the Fall 2023 Dean’s List.
These include: Logan Kalkbrenner of Pine Bluff, Adrianne Cooper of Arkansas City, and Marneka Creggett of Altheimer, according to a news release.
The fall terms run from September to December. Full-time undergraduate students who have earned a minimum grade-point average of 3.500 to 3.699 for the term are named to the Dean’s List.
USACE waives fees on MLK Day
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will waive day use fees at its more than 2,850 USACE-operated recreation areas nationwide in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Jan. 15.
The waiver covers fees for boat launch ramps and swim beaches. The waiver does not apply to camping and camping-related services or fees for specialized facilities and events. Other entities that manage recreation areas on USACE lands are encouraged, but not required, to offer the waiver in areas they manage, according to a news release.
Visitors should contact USACE projects before visiting to ensure recreation areas are open. The status of USACE-managed campgrounds, boat ramps, swim beaches and other sites is available at www.corpslakes.us.
