New Community to give away food
New Community Church, 321 N. Birch St., will hold open its pantry from 7:30-9 a.m. Saturday, according to a spokesman. The community is welcome to attend the food giveaway.
AG to discuss drug project at UAPB
Attorney General Tim Griffin will launch the One Pill Can Kill initiative at a press conference at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff’s STEM Building and Conference Center, 1500 L A Prexy Davis Drive.
The purpose is to educate students about the dangers of fentanyl and other opioids, according to the AG’s office.

Griffin also made an announcement at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock regarding this project. “Beyond just an awareness campaign, the One Pill Can Kill initiative provides hands-on training for student leaders to recognize the signs of an opioid overdose, how to administer naloxone to treat someone experiencing an overdose, and how to use testing strips to ensure that medications or beverages have not been laced with fentanyl,” according to the AG’s website.
Food drive set at fair Thursday
The Jefferson County Extension Homemakers Council is hosting a food drive, “Fill the Truck,” during the 86th annual Southeast Arkansas District Fair, on Thursday at the health fair. The date was incorrect in the original press release, according to a spokesman.
EHC members will accept healthy, non-perishable unexpired food from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday at Hestand Stadium Fairgrounds, 420 N. Blake St. Club members will be there to help you. By donating food or money you will be helping families in need of food security, according to a news release. The community is asked to participate. A community health fair will be held at the same time as Fill the Truck. Outdoor health expo set Oct. 4
The Pine Bluff Historic District, in conjunction with Explore Pine Bluff, will present an Outdoor Health Empowerment Expo from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Oct. 4 at the Donald W. Reynolds Community Services Center, 211 W. Third Ave. The expo is free and open to the public.
Health and fitness events will be held from 7 a.m. to noon. Participants can choose to bike, ride or run and explore Downtown Pine Bluff and other historic sites, according to StuffinTheBluff.com.
The schedule includes:
7 a.m. — 20 Mile Bicycle Ride for seasoned riders. Riders can start and end at Indigo Blue Coffeehouse, at 212 W. Barraque St.
10:30 a.m. — 1.3 Mile Bike Ride or Scavenger Hunt Walk –Pick up your tour card at the Expo Information booth at Sixth Avenue and Main Street, where the ride begins. Ride cards can be picked up at the Pine Bluff Public Library at 600 S. Main St. or the offices of Explore Pine Bluff, 623 S. Main St. (inside the ARTspace on Main.)
11:30 a.m. — 5.3 Miles Points of Interest. The ride begins and ends at Sixth Avenue and Main Street. The ride cards are available there. Hybrid and road bikes are recommended on this ride.
11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. — Workshops and screenings — the following sessions are scheduled: Disaster Preparedness (Emergency); Voter Registration – Education; Mental Health Awareness; Breast Cancer Awareness; Senior Citizen Health Issues; Social Security Benefits; Men’s Health Issues; and Blood Pressure and Diabetes Screenings.
11 a.m. to 2 p.m. — There will also be games such as chess, pickleball and bingo.
Participants will include American Red Cross, Arkansas Department of Health, Pine Bluff High School (4-H Club), City of Pine Bluff, Pine Bluff Branch NAACP, Tour De Bluff Cycling Club, Boys & Girls Club, TOPPS (Targeting Our People’s Priorities with Service), and SOAR (Students of Achievement and Responsibility).
