United Way plans Day of Caring
The annual Day of Caring hosted by United Way of Southeast Arkansas and Clean and Beautiful of Jefferson County will be held Friday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. along the green spaces on Hazel Street between 35th and 37th avenues.
The project includes cleaning and clearing the fence line, raking, pruning and removal of limbs and debris for phase one. Phase two includes digging holes for trees and plants, adding new soil to beds and plants and watering them. Phase three includes making final touches and cleaning the site of any remaining debris.
This special event brings together volunteers from across the community to roll up their sleeves and make a difference for local non-profit organizations, according to a news release.
There will be a variety of projects to choose do, each designed to support agencies in the community that provide essential services to those in need.

VA sets virtual claims clinic
The Little Rock VA Regional Office will hold a virtual claims clinic for Arkansas veterans from 4-6 p.m. Sept. 26. To reserve a timeslot, veterans should call (501) 370-3829 before 4 p.m. Sept. 25, according to a news release.
Veterans may speak one-on-one to staff of the Little Rock VA Regional Office regarding their claims for VA benefits. Staff will also answer questions about PACT Act benefits, existing VA benefits claims and assist with filing new claims.
The main office of the Little Rock VA Regional Office is located at 2200 Fort Roots Drive in North Little Rock and open Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Veteran Assist Phone Line, (501) 370-3829, is staffed Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Singer, songwriter to host event
Southeast Arkansas Concert Association will host singer/songwriter Jessica Lamb beginning Thursday and Friday in a program for K-12 grade students in southeast Arkansas.
Lamb graduated from Drew Central and is coming back to share her art and journey. She will host song-writing workshops.
These events are free to the schools in Ashley, Bradley, Chicot, Cleveland, Desha, Drew and Lincoln counties, according to a news release. Details: https://searkconcert.org.
Farm to Table event set
David and Edna Morgan invite the community to attend the Farm to Table event from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Oct. 12 at Morgan Farms, 8309 Old Warren Road.
Attendees can meet local farmers. Participants will include Ken and Jackie Carswell of Peaceful Pines Farm, Audrey Long of Grace Gardening, Cody and Victoria West of of S&W Farms, Burtchell Thomas of Burtchell Thomas Farm, John Wesson of JWTL Farms LLC, D&S Produce and Stephan Walker of Big Food Farm LLC, according to a news release.
The event is free to attend. Visitors can try free food samples. Local produce will also be available for purchase.
Courthouse, Restoration Grants available
The Arkansas Historic Preservation Program will open the grant application period today for the Historic County Courthouse and Historic Preservation Restoration grants.
AHPP is introducing an optional pre-application step, the Letter of Intent (LOI), to assist applicants in project development and identify the best preservation practices according to the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for Rehabilitation (SOIs). The LOI provides AHPP the opportunity to offer guidance and ensure that projects align with these standards, according to a news release.
The LOI Application deadline is Nov. 13.
The Courthouse Application deadline is Jan. 27.
Historic Preservation Restoration Application deadline is March 5.
Applicants are encouraged to submit their LOI and final applications via the AHPP’s online portal at http://bit.ly/2gNJ8dP.
The AHPP grants are designed to encourage and promote the preservation of Arkansas’s historic resources by providing financial assistance for the restoration of historic properties.
