Arkansas Hospice, 1301 Ridgway Road, Suite 2A. will host a volunteer training session at 9 a.m. Oct. 16 in the office. The event is for anyone wanting to learn about the organization and its volunteer opportunities. Lunch will be provided.

“A vital part of the hospice care team, Arkansas Hospice volunteers are caring, committed people from all walks of life who gain a sense of satisfaction from making a difference in the lives of others,” according to a news release. “These volunteers provide ongoing support wherever a patient calls home in a variety of ways that include making personal visits or phone calls, sitting with patients to give caregivers a rest and, most of all, listening and sharing thoughts and feelings. Other volunteer opportunities include helping with office work and special events plus specialized volunteering in other areas, such as sewing and pet therapy.”

Volunteers must be trained and certified. They must pass a background check and driving record check and provide evidence of a current driver’s license and automobile insurance. A flu shot is also required if volunteering involves direct contact with patients.

“Whatever your talents might be, you can make a big difference for our Arkansas Hospice patients and families in Pine Bluff and the surrounding area,” said Linda Bateman, volunteer coordinator. “Your help is always welcome and appreciated.”

CARTI plans Mammograms and Muffins

CARTI will host its annual Mammograms and Muffins. Held each October for Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the events are designed to reduce the barriers women often face in receiving their annual screenings, according to a news release.

Mammograms and Muffins will be held weekdays from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at the following locations:

Pine Bluff: Oct. 21-26 at 5001 Bobo Road;

Russellville: Oct. 1-5 at 209 S. Portland Ave.;

North Little Rock: Oct. 1-5 at 3400 Springhill Drive;

Little Rock: Oct. 14-19 at 8901 CARTI Way.

“Arkansas has made significant strides in improving our breast cancer screening rates, yet we still fall near the bottom of the charts for mammography use,” said Stacy Smith-Foley, M.D., board-certified breast imaging specialist. “The Breast Center at CARTI is committed to addressing this gap by ensuring all women have access to trusted, leading-edge care needed to protect their breast health.”

The Breast Center at CARTI recommends that women of average risk begin receiving their annual mammograms at age 40. Individuals at higher risk, such as those with family histories of breast cancer, should speak to their providers about considering earlier or additional screenings.

In addition to receiving their screenings at the events, women can enter giveaways and receive free educational materials. Those interested in scheduling an appointment may call (501) 537-MAMO.
