Ivy Center offers free ACT Boot Camp
The Ivy Center for Education will offer six free ACT Boot Camps, presented by Charity Smith-Allen, principal associate for education at Fetterman and Associates, and her team.
All workshops will be held on Zoom only. Students in 7-12th grades are encouraged to attend, according to a news release.
Smith-Allen spent 16 years as assistant commissioner/director for education in Arkansas before becoming a full-time consultant, according to https://www.drdavidfetterman.com/about-2-2.
“The ACT Boot Camps are paid for through a very much appreciated grant from the Pine Bluff Area Community Foundation,” said Mattie Collins, president of the Ivy Center.

The dates and subjects for the ACT Bootcamps include:
mOct. 10 — 6-8 p.m. — Math and English.
mOct. 24 — 6-8 p.m. — Science and Reading.
mNov. 7 — 6-8 p.m. — Math and English.
mNov. 21 — 6-8 p.m. — Science and Reading.
mDec. 5 — 6-8 p.m. — Math and English.
mDec. 12 — 6-8 p.m. — Science and Reading.

Angel Tree sign-ups available
The Salvation Army, 501 E. 12th Ave., will hold make-up days for people to sign their children up for Angel Tree gifts. The sign-up dates are Oct. 10 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Oct. 11 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Salvation Army office, according to a news release.
Only children 12 years and younger are eligible for Angel Tree gifts. Children aren’t allowed to attend the registration.
Participants must provide the following for the registration: proof of identification, proof of residence (utility bills), proof of income, birth certificate for each child, and size of clothing and shoes for each child.
Pine Bluff Art League to meet
The Pine Bluff Art League will hold its monthly meeting from 2-4 p.m. Sunday at the Donald W. Reynolds Community Services Center, 211 W. Third Ave. The league invites area artists and beginners to attend this free event.
Participants will work on shading techniques to create night paintings and drawings using multiple available mediums and paper materials. Artists may also bring their materials and follow along.
“Learn to form essential light sources, add nuanced highlights, and use dark values to develop contrast to evoke mysterious or striking compositions,” according to a news release.
The PBAL invites the community to view its works at the Arts & Science Center for Southeast Arkansas, 701 S. Main St.; the Donald W. Reynolds center; Simmons Bank in downtown Pine Bluff; Relyance Bank, 5503 S Olive St.; and Fairfield Community Credit Union in White Hall.
Emergency planning meeting set
The Local Emergency Planning Committee will meet at 10 a.m. Oct. 23 in the training room at the Jefferson County Office of Emergency Management in the courthouse.
Participants will be conducting a review of the Integrated Preparedness Planning Workshop held in June and the completed Integrated Preparedness Plan, according to a news release.
Christian Women’s luncheon set
The Christian Women’s Connection invites the community to its luncheon from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Oct. 17 at the Pine Bluff Country Club.
The special event will be a silent auction bake sale and White Elephant sales, according to a news release.
The speaker will be Julie Altemus of Carrollton, Texas. Her topic will be “Journey from Darkness to Light.”
“Julie has worked in the corporate sales industry for nearly a decade and brings her personal experience to the stage of winning battles, tacking teamwork, and helping several companies’ growth strategies,” according to the release.
Her ability to gain strong personal connections in the industry skyrocketed her career leading to awards and special recognitions as a top saleswoman, according to the release.
The Christian Women’s Connection luncheon costs $21, which includes the meal, drink, dessert, tax, and gratuity.
