WCHS to host violence prevention

In recognition of National Crime Prevention Month and the Day of National Concern, an assembly will be held at at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the Watson Chapel High School Auditorium.

The theme is “The Price is too High — Use Words Not Weapons to Solve Problems,” according to a news release.

Hosts include Pine Bluff Interested Citizens for Voter Registration Inc., Voices of Black Mothers United, Being Brothers for Kids Inc., Turning Point Youth Ministry Inc. and the Watson Chapel High School Wildcat Society Gentlemen’s Club.

This initiative aims to create a positive atmosphere among students in every school across the city by promoting conflict resolution skills through dialogue and encouraging the use of words instead of weapons to address conflicts. Students are invited to submit essays (at least 150 words minimum), draw posters, write poems or raps with the theme.

Students will showcase their talent or artwork at the assembly. The top winners will receive: first place – $200, second place – $150, third place – $125, and fourth place – $25.

Scholars will sign a pledge against gun violence, led by S. Kyle Hunter, Jefferson County prosecuting attorney. Guests will also include Kevin Crumpton, Group Violence Intervention director; Mayor Vivian L. Flowers; Pine Bluff Interim Police Chief Shirley Warrior, officials from the Southeast High School Historical Society LLC, and Jefferson County Sheriff Lafayette Woods Jr.

House of Bread to give away food

House of Bread Deliverance Church, 1501 W. Second Ave., will be open for its monthly food giveaway on Oct. 18 from 11 a.m. until all the food is gone. Participants must provide proof of address which must be at least a driver’s license, identification or utility bill, according to a news release.

Area Agency tells menu

Area Agency on Aging of Southeast Arkansas offers lunch from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. weekdays at the senior centers. Next week’s menu includes:

Oct. 20 — Cabbage roll soup, grilled cheese triangles, marinated tomatoes and cucumbers, emerald pears and milk.

Oct. 21 — Baked pasta, squash blend medley, tossed salad, cobbler and milk.

Oct. 22 — Glazed chicken, green peas, creamed carrots, cake and milk.

Oct. 23 — Beef stroganoff, spinach, corn, fruit and milk.

Oct. 24 — Cheeseburger, lettuce, tomato, onion, pickle, potato wedges, coleslaw, hot spiced peaches and milk.
