Local doctor among A-State trailblazers

The Women’s Leadership Collaborative at Arkansas State University will host the Recognizing Remarkable Women awards luncheon Nov. 8 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Cooper Alumni Center.

A Pine Bluff physician is among honorees, according to a news release.

The awards honor women from the Delta region for their significant contributions to their communities and fields.

Seven women will be recognized.

Dr. Tochi Amagwula Keeton, a dual board-certified obstetrician-gynecologist and obesity medicine specialist, is the recipient of the Champion of Women award. After moving to Pine Bluff in 2016, Keeton used her expertise to address women’s health needs, focusing on issues such as fibroids, menopausal symptoms, and fertility. She owned Healthwise Wellness Direct PLLC, a membership-based clinic that offered personalized care. A strong advocate for preventive medicine, Keeton is committed to empowering women in her community, believing that educating women strengthened entire communities, according to the news release.

Sharon Davis is the recipient of the Mentor of the Year award. Davis founded Strategic Technologies Corp. in 1993 and Strategic Continuity Services in 2005.

Christie Mink-Matthews, sales manager at the Jonesboro Radio Group, is the recipient of the Leader in Service award.

Christy Valentine, manager of academic partnerships at Hytrol Conveyor Co., is a recipient of the Leader in Service award.

Nina Crutchfield, assistant professor in the College of Agriculture at A-State, is a recipient of the Women to Watch award.

Tywanna Smith, an international sports advisor and retired professional basketball player, will receive a Women to Watch award.

Casey Kidd, executive director of the Family Crisis Center of Northeast Arkansas, will receive a Women to Watch award. Details: https://www.astate.edu/a/wlc/awards/.

Trinity Village sets soup event

Trinity Village will host its fall Soup Er Shop from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Oct. 24. Admission is by donation. Donations will be used to update parts of the medical center.

“Taste the soups and shop with 16 vendors,” according to a flier on the Pine Bluff Regional Chamber of Commerce’s newsletter.

PB to host movie on homeless day

The city of Pine Bluff will have a free movie screening today on World Homeless Day as part of their ongoing efforts to support the Opportunity House, an essential facility in the community dedicated to providing vital services to those in need.

“Beyond the Bridge” will be shown at 6 p.m. today at the Arts & Science Center for Southeast Arkansas, 701 Main St. The event is open to the community.

“We believe it (the movie) will serve as a catalyst for meaningful discussions and further support for the cause,” according to a news release. “This is not only an opportunity to enjoy a great film but also to engage with like-minded individuals who are passionate about making a difference in our community.” Details: Mayor’s office, (870) 730-2004.

Quilter’s guild meets Oct. 15

The Pine Bluff Quilter’s Guild will meet at 9:30 a.m. Oct. 15 at First Baptist Church, 6501 S. Hazel St. A special show and tell will be presented by members who attended the Pet Project Workshop.

A fall clearance sale will be held after the business meeting. Members are encouraged to shop the sale tables for material and sewing items for their use and for any sewing friends, according to news release.

Show-and-tell, along with fat quarter and door prize drawings will be held after the business meeting. Members with a birthday during the month of October are asked to bring a door prize, which should be related to quilting or sewing.

Everyone is encouraged to bring a fat quarter (18 by 22 inches) of 100 percent cotton for the monthly fat quarter drawing. Harvest prints are the feature for October.

The guild has an annual membership fee of $20. Anyone interested in learning the art of quilt making is welcome to attend and join the guild. The purpose of the guild is to ensure the continuity of the craft by teaching the techniques of quilting, and to encourage, and promote an interest in quilting to the public.

Free smoke alarm installations available

The American Red Cross of Northwest Arkansas, along with the Pine Bluff Fire and Emergency Services Department, are offering free smoke alarm installations and home safety education for Pine Bluff residents in need during a Sound the Alarm home fire safety event Oct. 19.

Residents can register at redcross.org/smokealarmAR for a 20-minute home fire safety visit and free smoke alarm installation between 9 a.m. and noon on Oct. 19. Any resident in Arkansas can receive the free smoke alarm and home safety education on a different day if they’re not available Oct. 19.
