Local competes in MSU contest

Jackelyn Garcia, an interior design major from Dumas, is among 110 students in Mississippi State University’s College of Architecture, Art and Design who launched the fall semester with an interdisciplinary student design competition.

Thirteen teams comprised of students from each major in Mississippi State’s College of Architecture, Art and Design-architecture, art, building construction science and interior design-competed for top honors and a cash prize in the annual Brasfield & Gorrie Student Design Competition, according to a news release.

This year’s competition tasked students with developing a comprehensive design, construction and branding plan for a housing resource center serving Starkville Strong, a nonprofit that provides essential support to residents in need. The center, named The Stronghold, is to be housed in an existing building and must include an office with a meeting room, a food pantry, overnight shelter accommodations, staff parking and outdoor space for clients.

UAPB observes POW/MIA day

The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff observed National POW/MIA Recognition Day on Sept. 19.

“This significant day, marked annually on the third Friday of September, is a profound tribute to prisoners of war (POW) and those still missing in action (MIA),” according to a news release. “It is a call for all Americans to deeply reflect on the sacrifices of our military service members and their families, and to proudly fly the POW/MIA flag in recognition of this unwavering commitment.”

During the observance, the Missing Man tables were displayed in Childress Hall and the L.A. Davis Dining Hall at UAPB. They stand as a visual testament to UAPB’s commitment and were available for viewing until the end of September.

“We want to show that UAPB supports our veterans,” said Marikka Bender, a UAPB instructor and co-chair of the UAPB Veterans Day Celebration.
