Alphas to observe Founders Day

Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc., Delta Sigma Lambda and Gamma Delta Chapters, will celebrate the 118th Founders Day at 7:06 p.m. Dec. 4 at Barraque Street Missionary Baptist Church, 1800 W. Pullen St.

The keynote speaker will be Southeast Arkansas College President Tyrone Jackson, Ed.D, a member of Alpha Phi Alpha.

The theme is Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc: 118 Years of Empowering Change Through Scholarship and Service to and for our Community, according to a news release.

Jackson was reared in Rosedale, Miss., where he attended high school before attending Delta State University, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in sociology and a master’s and doctoral degree in education.

Jackson began his professional career at Delta State. He continued his career at Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College as associate vice president for Student Services and dean of students at the Jefferson Davis campus.

He has also been associate vice president for Student Services at Hinds Community College, Utica Campus, and president of Mississippi Delta Community College.

Jackson has served on numerous boards including Habitat for Humanity, United Way, Harrison County Youth Leadership, and Gulfport Chamber of Commerce.

He has a scholarship named in his honor at Mississippi Delta Community College. He is the husband to Kashanta and the father of Tyler and Kennedi. He assumed the role of the president of SEARK College on July 1.

“Alpha Phi Alpha™ is the oldest intercollegiate historically African American fraternity. Initially organized as a study and support group during the 1905-1906 school year for minority students who faced racial prejudice at Cornell University, it evolved into a fraternity focused on scholarship and social impact, with a founding date of Dec. 4, 1906™,” according to the release.

Ministry After Divorce, painting events set

Alfred Carroll Ministries will present two upcoming events — a Ministry After Divorce Clergy Teleconference and Rock Painting with Paula Kittrell.

Ministry After Divorce teleconference will be held at 6:30 p.m. Dec. 5 via Zoom. The meeting ID number is 8986356066. The pass code is 9611508. To participate by phone, call 1.646.931.3860 (Enter the meeting ID and pass code when prompted.)

Panelists include the Rev. Fernando Kittrell known as “The Mental Health Pastor” of Austin, Texas; the Rev. George Glass, pastor of Greater Word of Life Ministries in Bastrop, La.; the Rev. Richard Lewis, pastor of Unity Baptist Church in Copperas Cove, Texas; and the Rev. Alfred Carroll, pastor of Greater Pine Bluff Baptist Church, according to Stuff in The Bluff.com.

Painting with Paula will be held at 5 p.m. Dec. 6 at the Pine Bluff/Jefferson County Public Library, 600 S. Main St. A mixer kicks off at 4:15 p.m.

Rock Painting with Paula is described as relaxing, therapeutic and fun, according to Paula Kittrell.

“My rock painting is part ministry and part therapy. I love it,” Kittrell said.

There will be refreshments and door prizes. Participants can register to win a prize for groups of four. The cost is $20 per person and may be paid by Cash App at $RevACarrJP. To register or obtain additional information, call (870) 692-9039.

Christmas Parade route set

The city of Pine Bluff will present Mistletoe Magic, the annual Christmas Parade, at 5:30 p.m. Dec. 3 in downtown Pine Bluff beginning at Sixth Avenue and Main Street.

The parade will travel north on Main Street, turn right at Sixth Avenue and Main Street, Travel east on Sixth Avenue, and turn right on Convention Center Drive, ending at the east parking lot next to the Pine Bluff Civic Center.

For parade participants, the lineup begins at 4:30 p.m. Everyone should be in line by 5:15 p.m. The staging area will be the East Collins Center Parking Lot in front of the Plaza Hotel – bands gather on the north side, floats/trailers gather on the east side. Mar’Tavius Proctor of the mayor’s office will be in charge of the lineup.

The Christmas Parade Committee will have Santa Claus at the parade, according to the news release.

The event will feature a panel of judges to evaluate and award the best floats and performances in various categories. Attendees are encouraged to bring their families, neighbors and friends to experience the event.

Local businesses and organizations interested in participating in the parade are encouraged to sign up early.
