Civic Auditorium panel to meet

There will be a in-person meeting for the Civic Auditorium Complex Commission at noon May 22, according to a news release. For those who cannot attend, a conference call will be available. Trinity Village cancels festival

Trinity Village, 6400 Trinity Drive, has canceled its festival that had been scheduled for Saturday, according to a spokesman.

GOP to meet May 23

The Jefferson County Republican Committee will meet at 6 p.m. May 23 at Larry’s Pizza in White Hall, according to a news release.

Audubon Society sets picnic

The Three Rivers Audubon Society will host its annual picnic June 4. Participants will meet at 9 a.m. at the Lake Saracen parking lot at the beginning of the walking trail. They will carpool to Arkansas Post. Participants should bring their own brown bag lunch, drinks and binoculars, according to a news release.

St. John plans gardening event

The Lay Organization of St. John A.M.E. Church, 1117 W. Pullen St., invites the community to attend a workshop on “Container Gardening” at 3 p.m. May 28. The Central Arkansas Sphinx Foundation will make a presentation.

Advantages of Container Gardening: It saves space. It’s ideal for those who have small gardens and patios. It’s affordable. Almost anything can be used as a container. It’s practical. Container gardening minimizes the workload. It’s movable. It’s protective, according to a news release. Sharon Fletcher is the lay president and the Rev. Chestine Sims Jr. is the pastor at St. John AME.

Caregivers Alzheimer’s meeting set

Area Agency on Aging of Southeast Arkansas, 709 E. Eighth Ave., will conduct the Caregivers Alzheimer’s Support Group meeting from 11 a.m to noon Monday.

The topic is Alzheimer’s Experiences and the speaker will be Charlotte Clausen, administrative coordinator at the South Central Center on Aging in Pine Bluff, a program of the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences.

Local on Indiana Dean’s List

Dean Harper of Monticello was named to the Dean’s List for the Spring 2024 semester at the University of Evansville at Indiana. To be placed on the Dean’s List, a student must have carried a full academic load of 12 hours or more and have earned a grade point average of 3.5 or above, according to a news release.

SNHU names locals to honors’ lists

Southern New Hampshire University at Manchester, N.H., recently named locals to its honors’ lists for Winter 2024.

DEAN’S LIST

Shannon Gordy of Pine Bluff and Roxanna Clay of Hermitage were named to the Dean’s List.

PRESIDENT’S LIST

The following residents were named to the President’s List: Hayley Funderburg of White Hall, Adrianne Cooper of Arkansas City, Morgan Fleming of Dermott, Tammy Newburn of Dumas, Katifah Williams of Monticello, Myla Rawls of New Edinburg, Marleshia Pickett-Mills of Warren, Marneka Creggett of Altheimer, and Nicholas Heady of Grapevine.

Full-time undergraduate students who have earned a minimum grade-point average of 3.700 and above are named to the President’s List. Those with a minimum grade-point average of 3.500 to 3.699 are named to the Dean’s List, according to a news release.

Ex-superintendents award scholarships

The 2024 Anthony, Gathen, Rainey and Tolbert Scholarships in the amount of $1,000 each have been awarded to high school seniors. The scholarships are named for former area school district superintendents.

Lydia Pointer — will be attending Arkansas State University Three Rivers at Malvern.

Jackson Norris — will be attending the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville.

Kaiden Daniels — graduating from the Arkansas School for Mathematics, Sciences, and the Arts, will be attending the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville.

WARREN HIGH SCHOOL

Terence Roberson Jr. — will be attending Ouachita Baptist University at Arkadelphia.

Pine Bluff High Schoolhad no students to apply.

Retired superintendents Frank Anthony — Pine Bluff, Thomas Gathen — Dollarway, David Rainey — Dumas, and Andrew Tolbert — Warren are pleased with the students selected and wish them the best as they begin their college careers, according to a news release.

Imagination Library sets fundraising event

YouthPartners of Pine Bluff will celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Imagination Library for Jefferson County, an affiliate of Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library, with a fund-raising luncheon.

The Imagination Library Summer Salad Luncheon will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. June 12 at the Donald W. Reynolds Community Services Building. Tickets are $15 and meals can be served to dine in or carry out, according to a news release.

Ten years ago, YouthPartners and other community leaders came together to launch the Imagination Library, an affiliate of Parton’s project founded in her hometown.

The local Imagination Library is a United Way partner agency. The goal of the program is to put a book in every child’s hand from birth to age five free to the family because of generous donors. The library consists of a 60-volume set of age-appropriate books that are mailed monthly to the child’s home in their name.

“Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library is dedicated to inspiring a love for reading by gifting books. The program is in Australia, Canada, Republic of Ireland, United Kingdom, and the United States,” according to the release.

Luncheon tickets can be purchased at the YouthPartners/Imagination Library in the Reynolds building or at the event.
