Runoff election, early voting set
The Jefferson County Clerk’s Office announced election related dates regarding the April 2 runoff. Early voting will be held March 26 through April 1.
Two races will be on the ballot:
Pine Bluff mayoral race between Mayor Shirley Washington and state Rep. Vivian Flowers.
Third Ward city council position between Council Member Glen Brown Sr. and William Fells.
Independent reporting for Pine Bluff & Jefferson County since 1879.
Election related dates:
March 25 — Sample ballots available on Voter View Website on the Secretary of State website.
March 25 — Absentee Ballots will be sent out. Voters must request an absentee ballot application from the county clerk’s office.
March 26 — First day of early voting. Early voting is held from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Jefferson County Courthouse.
March 26 — This is the first day a bearer can pick up ballots (maximum 2).
March 26 — This is the deadline to receive absentee ballot applications by mail, fax, email.
March 29 — This is the deadline to submit in-person absentee applications for ballots, deadline for the bearer/administrator to deliver absentee ballots, and deadline for county-to-county transfers.
April 1 — This the last day for early voting. It ends at 5 p.m.
April 2 — Election day. Designated polling sites will be open from 7:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.

UAPB providing free eclipse glasses
In collaboration with the Arkansas Space Grant Consortium and NASA Heliophysics Outreach, the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff Office of Research, Innovation and Economic Development is providing free solar eclipse glasses for those wanting to view the eclipse April 8.
The UAPB faculty, staff, students, and the public can receive free solar eclipse glasses during the UAPB Women’s History Month Celebration, where Dr. Jackie Walters, star of “Married to Medicine,” will be the distinguished lecturer for Women’s History Month. The lecture will be held Thursday from 10 a.m. to noon at the H.O. Clemmons Arena of the health, physical education and recreation complex.
Those unable to attend this event can email yazdania@uapb.edu by 5 p.m. Wednesday to reserve their glasses for pickup while supplies last.

Ag department to give away trees
In recognition of Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders proclaiming March 18 as Arkansas Arbor Day, the Arkansas Department of Agriculture’s Forestry Division will give away bare root seedlings at various locations across the state each Friday through April 26.
Species will vary by location and the giveaway will be limited to five seedlings per person on a first come, first served basis, according to a news release.
The Arkansas Urban Forestry Council, a new partner in the annual Free Tree Fridays campaign, purchased and donated six species of hardwood seedlings native to Arkansas.
Trees will be given away in southeast Arkansas at the following:

Redfield – Redfield City Ball Park, Huck Finn Boulevard: 11 a.m. – 1 p.m.
Sheridan – Mad Butcher, 815 Rock St.: 11 a.m. – 1 p.m.
APRIL 12
Warren – Warren City Park, 400 W. Church St.: 11 a.m. – 1 p.m.
APRIL 26
Stuttgart – Chamber of Commerce, 507 S. Main St.: 11 a.m. – 1 p.m.

UAPB department sets event
The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff Department of Multimedia Communications will host Multimedia Communications Week with events Wednesday through Friday.
“This event is crafted for college students who are passionate about exploring multimedia’s vibrant realm,” according to the release.
This event is designed to provide students with the tools and connections necessary to thrive in the multimedia industry.
“Our goal for Multimedia Communications Week is to provide students with a platform to expand their knowledge, network with industry professionals, and gain practical insights into multimedia,” said Multimedia Communications Chair Ann White-Taylor, Ph.D. “We are confident that students and speakers will find this experience enriching and inspiring.”
