Zebra Athletic Club golf tournament Friday

A fundraising golf tournament for Pine Bluff High School athletics is scheduled for Friday at the Pine Bluff Country Club.

The Zebra Athletic Club tournament will begin with lunch at 11 a.m., followed by a shotgun start at 1 p.m. Registration fees are $100 per individual and $400 for a team of four. Hole sponsorships are still available at $300 per hole.

The Zebra Athletic Club is established to provide support to the PBHS athletic department.

“Our mission is to raise funds through the support of parents, businesses and community members to enhance the acdemic and athletic endeavors of Pine Bluff student athletes,” club president Jason Lovell said. “The Zebra Athletic Club assists our student-athletes by providing scholarships, facility enhancements, travel expenses and meals.”

UAPB returns to normal operations

The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff has been cleared to resume normal academic and business operations after receiving a bomb threat Monday, according to a spokesman.

The UAPB Public Safety and Police Department, aided by the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, city of Pine Bluff Police Department, Little Rock Police Department, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation conducted physical and K-9 searches of the premises. The searches did not reveal any suspicious items or individuals, according to a news release.

The UAPB police increased its security measures on campus following the threat notifications Monday.

“The UAPB administration takes these threats seriously and continues to make the safety and well-being of students and employees the university’s top priority. Our police department will continue working with local, state, and federal law enforcement to ensure our campus remains open and safe,” according to the release.

“The university is committed to maintaining a safe environment for all members of our community. We want to take this opportunity to remind our community that if you ‘see something, say something.’ The Public Safety Department will continue to monitor the situation, along with local law enforcement. City to host fireworks display

The Fourth of July Celebration will take place at the softball complex in Pine Bluff Regional Park, according to Kerry Battle, director of the Pine Bluff Festival Association.

The evening will start at 8 p.m. with Laron Marbley of Deltaplex Radio’s 99.3 The Beat playing music. Then, southeast Arkansas’ largest fireworks show will begin at 9 p.m. Admission is free.

There will be limited parking near the softball complex as well as at Saracen Landing. Parking will also be available at the Jefferson County Courthouse parking lot and surrounding areas.

In case of severe weather, the fireworks will only be available for viewing at the complex at 9 p.m. July 5. Details: (870) 536-0920.

UAM sets new student registration

The University of Arkansas at Monticello will offer a fall 2024 class registration event from noon to 6 p.m. July 16 for first-time freshmen and new transfer students. This event is open new students who have submitted necessary materials to the Office of Admissions.

No program will take place during class registration. Students will be able to register for classes and have the option to visit any office related to attending school in the fall. Parents and legal guardians are welcome to attend, according to a news release.

PBICVR recruiting mentors

The Pine Bluff Interested Citizens for Voter Registration is recruiting mentors to assist with school programming for 2024-25. PBICVR is seeking college students needing community service hours, civic and social partnerships, clergy and laypersons.

The agency wants to increase the pool of mentors which will increase the number of adopted schools. Mentors can select the school of their choice to adopt, serving a minimum of one hour per week with Pastors on Patrol, and volunteers with the PEN OR PENCIL Nonviolence to No Violence mentoring movement utilizing the Six Principles of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

PBICVR also implements the Woodson Center K-12 Lessons Curriculum in regards to lesser-known African Americans. To register and become a mentor, call (870) 730-1131 or email pbicvr@aol.com for more information.

Registration will be held today through July 12. Mentoring training is scheduled for Saturday, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Donald W. Reynolds Community Services Center, 211 W. Third Ave.

Russ NAACP to meet

The Carnell Russ Branch NAACP Quarterly Meeting will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at 404 Cook Street in Star City. Refreshments will be served. Topics will be community trends and inclusivity, according to a news release.

Area resident on Rhodes’ honor roll

Rhodes College of Memphis named Nessa Blair of Stuttgart to the spring 2024 honor roll. To qualify for the honor roll, a student must be enrolled in at least 16 credits of academic work and achieve a semester grade point average of 3.85 or better, according to a news release.
