UAMS plans white coat ceremony at PB

The University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences will hold a white coat ceremony to kick off the inaugural summer academy of the Arkansas Delta Health Careers Opportunity Program Academy.

The event will be held at 5 p.m. today at the Kountz-Kyle Auditorium of the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff, according to a news release.

The academy is an initiative that supports students in the Delta and South Arkansas as they pursue careers in health care. Thirty-five rising high school seniors from the program’s 20-county service area will take part in the ceremony, where they will receive white coats that symbolize their first step on the pathway to health careers.

Delta Dental foundation offers grants

Major revisions are being made to the Delta Dental of Arkansas Foundation’s signature grant program. Starting Monday, the “Community Grants” will be launched as rolling grants instead of annual grants at https://www.deltadentalar.com/communitygrants.

Applications will be reviewed quarterly, with approved grant amounts issued shortly after that, as opposed to each January, according to a news release.

Projects must focus primarily on dental treatment or disease prevention. Requests exclusively for oral health education, which previously were eligible for Community Grant consideration, must now be submitted under a different grant category. However, the individual grant amounts have remained unchanged, ranging from $2,500 to $40,000.

Community Grant applicants must be Arkansas-based 501(c)(3) non-profits, government agencies, schools or charitable dental treatment facilities.

Grant guidelines and the online application may be accessed at https://www.deltadentalar.com/communitygrants.

Locals graduate at Alabama

The University of Alabama at Tuscaloosa recently named its spring 2024 graduates, including area residents, according to a news release.

Blake Johnson of Stuttgart received a Master of Fine Arts.

Produce topics at Horticulture day

The latest research on growing fruits, vegetable and ornamental will be featured at the University of Arkansas System Division of Agriculture’s Horticulture Field Day on June 27.

The event will be held 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Division’s Southwest Research and Extension Center in Hope. Experts from the division’s Cooperative Extension Service will provide research results and demonstrations throughout the day, according to a news release.

“I am really excited by all the young faculty who are doing work at the Southwest Research and Extension Center,” said Daniel Rivera, center director. “This is a great opportunity for folks to come see the important research conducted here as well as see some of the newer additions.”

One new feature this year is the All-American Selection Garden, where attendees can learn about ornamentals.

Extension specialists conduct research at the Southwest Research and Extension Center on a variety of fruit and vegetable crops, including tomatoes, cabbage, cantaloupe, squash, pumpkins and blackberries. The center is part of the Arkansas Agricultural Experiment Station, the research arm of the Division of Agriculture.

In addition to research findings, extension family and consumer sciences agents will provide tips, nutritious information and recipe demonstrations with featured fruits and vegetables.
