Simmons reports 2nd quarter earnings

Simmons First National Corp. reported Wednesday net income of $40.8 million for the second quarter of 2024, compared to $38.9 million in the first quarter of 2024 and $58.3 million in the second quarter of 2023, according to a news release.

Diluted earnings per share were $0.32 for the second quarter of 2024, compared to $0.31 in the first quarter of 2024 and $0.46 in the second quarter of 2023. Adjusted earnings for the second quarter of 2024 were $41.9 million, compared to $40.4 million for the first quarter of 2024 and $61.4 million for the second quarter of 2023.

Adjusted diluted earnings per share for the second quarter of 2024 were $0.33, compared to $0.32 for the first quarter of 2024 and $0.48 for the second quarter of 2023.

Agency awards Farmers Market grants

The Arkansas Department of Agriculture announced the grant recipients of the ninth annual Arkansas Farmers Market Promotion Program. In 2024, more than $10,000 in grants will be provided through the program to the 20 farmers markets, according to a news release.

Southeast Arkansas recipients include:

Dermott Farmers Market, Dermott

Grand Prairie Farmers Market, Stuttgart

Sheridan Arkansas Farmers Market, Sheridan.

This program, which is administered by the department and funded by the Farm Credit Associations of Arkansas, provides funding assistance to build awareness for farmers markets and their vendors.

This funding may be used for signage, local advertising, and social media campaigns to build community and regional awareness for a specific farmers market. Details: agriculture.arkansas.gov/

Review board to consider historic sites

The Arkansas State Review Board will consider the nominations for several Arkansas properties to the National Register of Historic Places at their meeting Aug. 7, according to a news release.

In the Rison area, Cherry Cemetery in Cleveland County is among nominations to the National Register. The Cherry Cemetery, which is located in rural Cleveland County, reflects the settlement history of the former Mt. Elba community in central Cleveland County.

The board will consider a nomination for the Old Kingsland Post Office in Cleveland County to the Arkansas Register. Details: arkansasheritage.com/arkansas-preservation/properties/national-registry.

Trail of Tears meeting set

Local author Jason Irby, president of the Arkansas Trail of Tears Association, invites the community to a public meeting at 1 p.m. Aug. 3 at the Frisco Station Depot in Fort Smith.

The association’s board meeting will begin at 11 a.m. followed by the public meeting. The guest speaker will be author Michelle Cook, a member of the Chickasaw Nation. She will discuss the topic of Chickasaw Lighthorse Police prior to Oklahoma statehood.

Preserve Arkansas seeks nominees

Preserve Arkansas is accepting nominations for the 2024 Arkansas Preservation Awards. Winners will be honored in January. The awards recognize outstanding preservation achievements, people who make a difference in their communities, and projects that inspire others to protect Arkansas’s special historic places, according to a news release.

Members of the public are invited to submit nominations in the following 13 categories:

Outstanding Work by a Craftsperson

Excellence in Preservation through Rehabilitation

Excellence in Preservation through Restoration

Outstanding Achievement in Adaptive Reuse
