City plans free dump day, cleanup

The city of Pine Bluff invites residents to use the free dump day to get rid of unwanted items Saturday and to attend the community cleanup July 20.

Free dumping — The dump day will be held from 7 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Hestand Stadium. Residents can dispose of appliances, furniture, mattresses, scrap metal, yard waste, and other items. However, the site will not accept tires, infectious waste, batteries, or electronics. For more information, contact the Pine Bluff Street Department at (870) 543-5140.

Cleanup — Residents are invited to join the city’s first community clean-up as part of the Slam Dunk the Junk initiative from 7-10 a.m. July 20. Participants will meet at the Townsend Park Pavilion, 1000 Townsend Drive.

Post-Prison Transfer Board to meet

The Arkansas Post-Prison Transfer Board will hold its monthly board meetings at 9 a.m. Thursday and July 25 in the Richard Lee Richardson Auditorium, 1302 Pike Ave., in North Little Rock.

Meeting to address school election

A meeting will be held at 6 p.m. Friday at the Pine Bluff/Jefferson County Library, 600 Main St., regarding electing Pine Bluff School Board members.

All Pine Bluff School District stakeholders interested in an election of all seven PBSD board directors are asked to meet, according to spokesman Charline Wright.

GOP committee to meet

The Jefferson County Republican Committee will hold its meeting July 25 at 6 p.m. at Larry’s Pizza on Dollarway Road in White Hall, according to a news release.

Local on Dean’s list in Kansas

Paul D. Peacock of Pine Bluff is on the Dean’s Honor Roll for spring 2024 at Wichita State University in Wichita, Kan.

To be included on the dean’s honor roll, a student must be enrolled full time (at least 12 credit hours) and earn at least a 3.5 grade point average on a 4.0 scale, according to a news release.

Dumas resident joins honor society

Lennia Clark-Harrison of Dumas was recently initiated into The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi at Arkansas State University.

Phi Kappa Phi is the nation’s oldest and most selective all-discipline collegiate honor society, according to a news release.

More than 25,000 students, faculty, professional staff and alumni are initiated into Phi Kappa Phi each year.

Old St. James sets health fair

Old St. James Missionary Baptist Church, 4512 S. Ohio St., will conduct its Community Health Fair 2024 from 10 a.m. to 2 p,m. Aug. 3 at Old St. James’ Family Life Center. Hosted by the church, this event is free.

The community is encouraged to take advantage of free health screenings, backpacks, school supplies and giveaways.

There will also be food trucks, vendors and other activities, according to a news release.

Health screenings will be available for cholesterol, diabetes, prostate, mammograms, B.M.I., colorectal, blood pressure, and lung cancer.

The health fair will provide awareness about issues including chronic kidney disease, smoking cessation, mental health, sickle cell, kidney transplant, rehabilitation services, health insurance, CPR demonstrations, and medication monitoring and management.

Partners include First Ward Living Grace Food Pantry, Arkansas Minority Health Commission, Arkansas Department of Health, Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, Pine Bluff Fire and Emergency Services, CARTI, University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences, Gertleeby’s Health & Wellness PLLC, Jefferson Regional Medical Center, Emergency Ambulance Services Inc., Southeast Arkansas Behavioral Healthcare System, Brown Chiropractic and Area Agency on Aging of Southeast Arkansas.

VA sets virtual claims clinic

The Little Rock VA Regional Office will hold a virtual claims clinic for Arkansas veterans from 4-6 p.m. July 25. To reserve a timeslot, veterans should call (501) 370-3829 before 4 p.m. July 24, according to a news release.

Veterans may speak one-on-one to staff of the Little Rock VA Regional Office regarding their claims for VA benefits. Staff will also answer questions about PACT Act benefits, existing VA benefits claims, and assist with filing new claims.

The main office of the Little Rock VA Regional Office is located at 2200 Fort Roots Drive in North Little Rock and open Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Veteran Assist Phone Line, (501) 370-3829, is staffed Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.
