Christian Women plan luncheon

The Christian Women’s Connection will conduct its monthly luncheon from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Jan. 15 at the Pine Bluff Country Club.

The speaker will be Lynae Jacobs, a retired educator from Amarillo, Texas, who will discuss “Tool Box for a Broken Soul.” Also featured will be Melody Grace of Amarillo, a Christian gospel singer, according to a news release.

Jacobs is the past chair of communication and theatre at Amarillo College. She holds a Bachelor of Science degree in speech and theatre and a Master of Arts degree in speech communications from West Texas A&M University.

She retired after 34 years in education. She enjoys performing at Amarillo Little Theatre, judging one act plays all over Texas, making jewelry, and playing the ukulele, which on occasion she uses with songs in her talks. In her spare time, she also flips houses.

“The event that left her spiraling out of control was the unexpected death of her son Conner. She has learned that God has everything under His control and that His plans are far beyond everything that we can imagine,” according to the release.

The Christian Women’s Connection Luncheon is $20 and everyone is invited to attend. All participants are asked to honor their reservations. For reservations and/or cancellations, contact Jennifer Keahey at (870) 540-9302.

DAR Marian Anderson scholarship open

Undergraduate and graduate students studying music can apply for the DAR Marian Anderson Legacy Scholarship through Jan. 31. Sponsored by the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR), the scholarship provides a one-time $5,000 award to one music student annually.

“Marian Anderson (1897-1993) was a ground-breaking African American contralto and an inspiration for civil rights,” according to a news release.

Applicants should be accepted or enrolled in an accredited university or college in the United States and have a concentration in music in their course of study. They should have a minimum grade point average of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale or the equivalent GPA on the scale used by the institution.

“This scholarship pays tribute to Marian Anderson’s life, and the Daughters of the American Revolution seeks to honor her legacy through aspiring musicians,” Ginnie Sebastian Storage, DAR president general said in the release. “Her legacy lives on in others who aim for excellence in musical studies, are committed to their communities, and willing to stand up for what is right.”

In honor of Anderson’s commitment to the community, applicants are asked to write a personal statement describing their humanitarian or volunteer contributions on behalf of their community and/or country.
