DAV plans PB meeting

The Disabled American Veterans (DAV) Department of Arkansas will meet from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday at Leon’s Catfish & Shrimp, 3801 Chapel Village #18.

The purpose of the meeting is to continue recruiting new members and electing new officers for DAV Chapter 12 which is located in Pine Bluff, according to a news release. Billy Sanders is the DAV commander.

Chamber to host Graphyte event

The Pine Bluff Regional Chamber of Commerce rescheduled its Lunch & Learn event for noon Feb. 6 at the Donald W. Reynolds Community Services Center.

The event will feature officials with Graphyte, a company that’s developing a new technology called Carbon Casting, which claims to permanently remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.

Chamber to host candidates’ forum

The Pine Bluff Regional Chamber of Commerce will host a forum for the Pine Bluff mayoral candidates and city council candidates at 5:30 p.m. Feb. 29 at the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff’s STEM Conference Center, 1500 L.A. Prexy Davis Drive.

The Chamber is collaborating with the UAPB Student Government Association to host this educational session.

“This event is not a debate,” according to the Chamber newsletter. “This is an informative session that will serve as a learning opportunity for Pine Bluff Chamber members, citizens, and UAPB students who are eligible to vote in the March 5 Primary Election. This forum will also be streamed through social media for those who are unable to attend.”

The Chamber is asking its member businesses to make a $100 commitment to help support this event. The Chamber doesn’t endorse any candidate for public office. Details: (870) 535-0110.

City announces healthcare career fair

A healthcare career fair will be held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. March 13 at the Pine Bluff Convention Center. The Economic and Community Development Department of the city of Pine Bluff are hosting the event.

There’s no registration fee to attend the event. Healthcare employers and training providers may register by contacting Cynthia Anderson at canderson@cityofpinebluffar.gov.

ACO, ICVR set forum

Arkansas Community Organizations and Pine Bluff Interested Citizens for Voter Registration will sponsor a candidates’ forum at 6 p.m. Thursday in rooms A and B of the Donald W. Reynolds Community Services Center, 211 W. Third Ave.

The event will feature candidates for Pine Bluff mayor and city council. Kymara Seals will be the moderator, according to a news release. Candidates will be asked to respond to questions developed by community members.

“Our neighborhoods are just as important as downtown,” said a Jefferson County ACO spokesman. “We need to invest in them. We need better drainage, more streetlights and safer streets.”

Corps issues small craft advisory

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers issued a small craft advisory for the McClellan-Kerr Arkansas River Navigation System in Arkansas. Heavy rainfall in Arkansas over the last 24 hours resulted in Arkansas River flows exceeding 70,000 cubic feet per second at Dardanelle, according to a news release.

Small craft advisories are issued when flows exceed 70,000 cfs. Strong currents and large debris can threaten the safety of pleasure craft during high flows. Current flows at Dardanelle and Ozark are above 100,000 cfs. A crest greater than 100,000 cfs. will make its way downstream over the next few days. Thurgood Marshall scholarship open

The Thurgood Marshall College Fund has opened the first wave of its 2024-2025 scholarship cycle, according to a news release from the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff. Webinars and virtual office hours started Jan. 23 and the application process closes on March 8. The TMCF Scholarships Team will also host a webinar series Feb. 24 at 5:30 p.m. The webinars are designed to assist students in putting their best brand forward when completing the TMCF Scholarship Application. Registration is required.
