Watson Chapel School District will be closed today due to inclement weather, according to a news release.
Federal retirees meeting cancelled
The NARFE (National Active Retired Federal Employees) Chapter 287 meeting for Jan. 22 has been cancelled. Waymond Meins is the Chapter 287 president, according to a news release.
UAM closed

Due to hazardous road conditions and icy surfaces on campus, the University of Arkansas at Monticello will pivot to virtual learning and business operations today. All campuses and offices will be closed. Critical personnel should report for duty.
UAM plans to resume normal operations Thursday. Notices concerning the operation of each UAM campus are available on the UAM website, by local media and through UAMAlert, according to a news release.
Chamber to reschedule Graphyte event
The Pine Bluff Regional Chamber of Commerce cancelled its Lunch & Learn event Tuesday at the Donald W. Reynolds Community Services Center. The event will be rescheduled featuring officials with Graphyte, which is starting its first project in Pine Bluff, according to the Chamber newsletter.
AGFC to reschedule Lake Chicot neeting
The Arkansas Game and Fish Commission cancelled its Tuesday public meeting at the Lake Village Fire Station, 2017 Highway 65, to discuss a Lake Chicot drawdown. A new meeting date will be posted once the current weather system has passed.
“We apologize for any inconvenience, but poor road conditions would prevent access to all who may want to attend these meetings concerning the scheduled drawdown of Lake Chicot in 2024,” according to a news release.
WH resident on Dean’s List
State Technical College of Missouri at Linn, Mo., recently named Avery Moore of White Hall to the Dean’s List during the 2023 fall semester. A full-time student must earn a semester grade point average between 3.5 and 4.0 on a 4-point scale to be named to the list, according to a news release.
Grants available for educators
Arkansas public-school personnel are encouraged to apply for the 2024 Arkansas Retired Teachers Association (ARTA) Grants Program. Applications must be submitted online and the deadline is March 31, according to a news release.
Two grants are available. The Parsons-Burnett Grant is awarded to certified personnel to help further their education. Awards are intended for courses of study leading to an advanced degree, certification or endorsement.
The Mitchell-Fair Grant is awarded to classified personnel for the purpose of obtaining an Arkansas teaching license.
Grants of $2,000 each will be awarded through a competitive application process. The total number of awards will be determined by the number of applications and the availability of funds.
The ARTA Grants Program is funded by contributions from members of ARTA, a professional membership organization of Arkansas’s public-education retirees.
