Local earns degree at Georgia Tech

Timothy Brown of Pine Bluff earned a Master of Science degree in medical physics from the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta. Brown was among approximately 6,300 students to be presented degrees during the institute’s 265th commencement exercises Dec. 15-16, according to a news release.

Credit union offers scholarship

Arkansas Federal Credit Union is accepting applications for a $5,000 scholarship. The scholarship is awarded to a graduating high school student planning to attend a two- or four-year accredited institution or trade school.

Boys State registration opens

Arkansas Boys State, a leadership and civic engagement experience sponsored by the American Legion, will host its 83rd session May 26-31 at the University of Central Arkansas. Registration is open, according to a news release.

Male high school students currently in their junior year are eligible for attendance and must first be selected by their respective high schools to attend.

During the program, students administer a mock government as if it were real: run for office, draft and pass legislation, solve municipal challenges and engage constituents.

Public schools, private schools, and homeschool associations are eligible to select students for attendance. Details: arboysstate.org.

Simmons opens Tennessee center

Simmons Bank celebrated the grand opening of a new financial center in Brentwood, Tenn. Simmons operates two full-service branches in the Brentwood area. The bank operates 12 full service branches in the Nashville metropolitan statistical area and ranks as the 9th largest bank in the state of Tennessee based on deposit market share, according to a news release.

Dental foundation awards grant

The Delta Dental of Arkansas Foundation awarded almost $268,000 to the School-Based Health Alliance of Arkansas for a new initiative to help expand access to dental care for K-12 students in rural parts of the state.

The funding supports the state’s first school-based oral health learning collaborative. In partnership with three other government and nonprofit organizations, the SBHAAR will instruct four Arkansas school-based health centers on how to start or expand their services to offer dental care to K-12 students, according to a news release.

Partnering with the SBHAAR are the Arkansas Department of Health, the Arkansas Department of Education and Virginia Health Catalyst, a nonprofit organization. They will instruct the following Arkansas school-based health centers on how to start or expand their services to offer dental care to K-12 students:

East Arkansas Family Health Service Inc. (Northeast Arkansas)

Mainline Health Systems Inc. (Southeast Arkansas)

Jerry “Pop” Williams Elementary (Northwest Arkansas)

Fouke Health and Wellness Center (Southwest Arkansas.)
