PB Chamber dinner to feature Flowers

The Pine Bluff Regional Chamber of Commerce Annual Dinner will be held Jan. 23 at the Pine Bluff Country Club. Cocktails will be served at 6 p.m. and dinner at 6:30 p.m.

This year’s featured speaker is Pine Bluff Mayor-Elect Vivian Flowers, who takes over as mayor on Jan. 1.

“Join us as we welcome the mayor-elect and hear her vision and plans for her upcoming term in office,” according to the Chamber newsletter. “This is a unique opportunity for the business community to engage with our city’s new leadership and be part of shaping Pine Bluff’s future.”

Locals earn Fulbright scholarships

Local students were awarded scholarships this fall from the Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Arkansas. More than $4.9 million was awarded through 1,855 scholarships to students this year.

These scholarships are made possible from the support of donors, who include alumni, faculty, staff and friends of Fulbright College, and aid students across the college’s four academic disciplines: arts, humanities, natural sciences and social sciences, according to a news release.

Recipients include:

Lauren Van Dee of Wilmar was awarded the Bobbitt Family Fund in Chemistry and Theatre.

Cemaja Thompson of Dermott was awarded the Dr. Carl and Peggy Johnson Family Scholarship.

India Young of Warren was awarded the Frances Greer and Herman Harrison Hankins Endowed Scholarship.

Annah Edwards of Lake Village was awarded the Frances Greer and Herman Harrison Hankins Endowed Scholarship.

John Eckert of Sheridan was awarded the Sturgis Grant for Honors Scholars.

Each year, Fulbright College awards scholarships to its students to support their academic success, including scholarships for study abroad, honors studies, research fellowships and more. Details: fulbright.uark.edu/scholarships.

PBICVR obtains $15k grant

The Woodson Center, a nonpartisan organization in Washington, D.C., has awarded a $15,000 grant to the Pine Bluff Interested Citizens for Voter Registration Inc., a member of the Community Affiliate Network in Arkansas.

The grant aims to enhance various initiatives that improve the well-being and quality of life for the residents of Pine Bluff, according to a news release.

“PBICVR, a nonprofit and tax-exempt organization, has been diligently working to uplift the community through a range of programs. Despite encountering financial difficulties, the organization has successfully provided essentials, such as free income tax preparation for families with lower wealth,” The Woodson Center spokesman said in the release.

The support from the Woodson Center helps PBICVR with resources to provide a number of community programs. The services offered have improved well-being, strengthened family relationships, enhanced academic performance in Pine Bluff schools, encouraged scholars to resist gang activity and reduced anti-social behavior, according to the release. JRMC to hold blood drive

Jefferson Regional Medical Center will host a blood drive from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Thursday in the south classrooms 2-3. Long sleeved holiday T-shirts and $15 Butterball coupons will be available while supplies last, according to a flier.

Exodus.Life to host Santa

Exodus.Life, 316 W. Sixth Ave., will host Cookies with Santa from 1-3 p.m. Saturday. All ages are welcome to attend the free event, according to a flier.

“Exodus.Life is a 501c3, non-profit organization, dedicated to providing comprehensive and compassionate addiction treatment services to individuals, no matter where they are in their recovery journey,” according to its website.
