Local UAPB alumni plan scholarship gala

The Pine Bluff/Jefferson County University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff/AM&N Alumni Chapter will host its annual Scholarship Gala at 6:30 p.m. Sept. 27 at the Pine Bluff Convention Center.

The theme of the black tie affair is “Thriving for Excellence: Focusing on the Students,” according to a news release.

The tickets are $40 each or $400 for a table of 10. With community support, the alumni chapter will be able to provide four $1,000 scholarships to students at UAPB. The scholarships will assist some students in meeting their financial obligations in college.

The gala will also honor the following supporters and community leaders: Charles Colen Jr., chair of the UAPB Department of Industrial Technology Management and Applied Engineering; District 64 State Rep. Kenneth Ferguson, a member of the state House of Representatives; David Maddox, owner of Fathers and Sons Clothier; Carlton Saffa, the chief market officer at Saracen Casino Resort; and Dr. Kristopher Stepps, a physician.

The gala committee is offering ads for the souvenir booklet: full page $150; half page $75; and a quarter page $50.

The advertiser must provide a print production quality (JPEG, PNG, or BMP) ad by Sept. 6. All items, including photographs are non-returnable. Checks must be payable to the PBJC UAPB AM&N Alumni Chapter and mailed to P.O. Box 9288, Pine Bluff, AR 71611.

The deadline to purchase ads is Sept. 6 and to purchase tickets is Sept 10. Contact Liddell about purchasing an ad, ticket or table and she will deliver tickets, mail them or leave them at the Will Call table.

Labor Day closings set

Several agencies have announced plans to observe Labor Day, Sept. 2.

Jefferson County Courthouse and related offices will be closed today and Monday.

Pine Bluff City Hall will be closed today and Monday.

Area Agency on Aging of Southeast Arkansas offices and senior centers will be closed Monday. Southeast Arkansas Transportation (SEAT) will still transport cancer and dialysis patients to appointments.

Pine Bluff/Jefferson County Library System will be closed Saturday through Monday.

Waste Management customers scheduled for garbage pickup Sept. 2-6 will be serviced one day late next week due to the Labor Day holiday. This delay will affect all customers in Jefferson County and unincorporated areas, and customers in Pine Bluff and White Hall. For next week, Monday customers will be serviced Tuesday; Tuesday customers will be serviced Wednesday; Wednesday customers will be serviced Thursday; Thursday customers will be service Friday; and, Friday customers will be serviced Saturday, according to a news release.

State Capitol offices and state buildings will be closed. However, the state Capitol building will be open to the public from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m., according to a news release.

Ivy Center sets engineering, coding event

The Ivy Center for Education will present a Focus on Engineering and Coding Workshop from 6-7 p.m. Sept. 10 at the Generator, 435 S. Main St., with Karl Walker of the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff.

Grand opening set for NE Rice center

VIPs from the agriculture industry and academia will be cutting the ribbon for the grand opening of the Northeast Rice Research and Extension Center in Harrisburg.

The event will be held today. Presentation of the colors will begin at 10:20 a.m. followed by the formal program at 10:30 a.m. The center held its first full field day Aug. 8 with more than 250 people in attendance.

The agenda includes the welcome and opening remarks at 10:30 a.m. by Jean-François Meullenet, director of the Arkansas Agricultural Experiment Station of the U of A System Division of Agriculture, and Tim Burcham, director of the NE Rice Research and Extension Center.

At 11:30 a.m., officials will cut the ribbon followed by comments from architects, builders, and naming sponsors. At 12:30 p.m., there will be facility tours and refreshments. Details: https://aaes.uada.edu.
