Golden Lions in Southern Heritage exhibit

The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff Golden Lions are part of a Southern Heritage Classic exhibition at National Civil Rights Museum in Memphis.

The exhibition is titled ‘The Southern Heritage Classic: Celebrating 35 Years of an HBCU Memphis Tradition’ and opens in Memphis on Sept. 11 as part of the 35th Southern Heritage Classic weekend.

The museum presents a unique exhibition that pays tribute to the black college football experience and the rich tradition it embodies, according to a news release.

The display is a journey through the origins of historically black colleges and universities in America, their ties to the Civil Rights Movement, the emergence of black athleticism, and a walk through the Classic Weekend events that showcase the vibrant culture of Memphis.

The exhibition tells the story of Fred Jones Jr., the founder of the Southern Heritage Classic, and shares his vision of sustaining and expanding the popularity of this annual cultural celebration held each September.

According to the museum, the exhibition features 120 artifacts from Jones’ collection. It offers an interactive experience with recaps and footage of the games, highlights of collegiate football players who continued their careers in the NFL, and spotlights the popular halftime “Battle of the Bands.” It also provides a glimpse into the popular tailgate and the entertainment events that precede the game.

The exhibition, running from Sept. 11 Feb. 28, 2025, celebrates the black college football experience and rich tradition and is included with museum admission.
