Choirs of Grace Episcopal, First Presbyterian to present Choral Evensong

The choirs of Grace Episcopal Church and First Presbyterian Church will combine for a joint Choral Evensong service in celebration of the Royal School of Church Music’s annual Music Sunday at 6:30 p.m. Sunday.

The special service will be held at Grace Episcopal Church, 4101 S. Hazel St. The service will be led by the Rev. Dr. Cheryl Clark, rector of Grace Episcopal Church, with organist Chuck Fuller and conductor, André Strydom.

The Royal School of Church Music, founded in 1927 by Sir Sydney Nicholson, is an international and interdenominational organization dedicated to effective and inspiring music-making within the Christian church. The RSCM’s annual Music Sunday is a celebration of the music and musicianship that are a vital and beloved part of church life, a salute in words and music to the creativity, discipline, effort, and dedication of thousands of musicians, amateur and professional, who faithfully serve the church.

Choral Evensong is a special service in the Anglican tradition that offers worshippers the opportunity to gather and spend time in prayer while listening to, and participating in, music that has been selected to bring those present into a deeper understanding of the mysteries of their faith. And so the choir sings music “on behalf of the congregation” that includes the “Magnificat” (Song of Mary) and the “Nunc Dimittis” (Song of Simeon), various prayers and responses, hymns, Psalm, and an anthem, all of which allows the congregation time to meditate and enter into a deeper attitude of prayer through the words and music.
