Chicago storyteller to perform at Sherrill

Marie Johnson, also known as Momma Kemba, a storyteller from Chicago, will perform as Harriet Tubman in a Juneteenth celebration at 7 p.m. Saturday, June 18, at New Salem Missionary Baptist Church at Sherrill. The program is co-sponsored by Antioch Missionary Baptist Church.

Johnson travels the U.S. and abroad performing as Momma Kemba. She keeps the spirit of strong black women in American History alive through dramatic storytelling and song, according to an article at http://www.storytelling.org

“The stories of Harriet Tubman, Mary McLeon-Bethune, Sojourner Truth, Eda B. Wells, Aunt Clara Brown and Fannie Lou Hamer are done in full costume. Kemba has conducted workshops instructing teachers/students how to teach/learn through drama/storytelling,” according to the article.
