Center’s floor not damaged by rain, parks’ official says

The Chester Hynes Community Center’s new flooring was not damaged by rain that leaked into the building Friday, Parks and Recreation Department Director Angela Parker said Tuesday.

Parker said she inspected the flooring earlier Tuesday and found the new unfinished wood surface was not damaged. The Commercial received complaints Friday that the floor had been damaged.

Parker said workmen covered the floor with plastic sheeting and buckets were placed on the sheeting to catch the leaks.

Parker’s comments came at a scheduled Parks and Recreation Commission meeting that lacked a quorum. Commission Chairman Kami Hunt was the only member present. The meeting was rescheduled for 4 p.m. Thursday.

Damaris Mims, who has a son enrolled in the center’s after-school program, told The Commercial she was “shocked and upset” to find the unfinished gym floor covered with 10 to 15 buckets to catch water leaking from the roof.

Fourth Ward Alderman Steven Mays said he had been told the roof would be repaired before work on the gym floor started.
