cash only bond for man who ran from deputies, caused accident and hit police car

A $100,000 cash only bond was set Tuesday for a Pine Bluff man wanted on multiple charges who fled from sheriff’s deputies in late January, causing one accident and then hitting a police car at White Hall.

Pine Bluff District Judge John Kearney set the bond after ruling prosecutors have probable cause to charge Corjalon Evans, 22, with felony fleeing, first-degree criminal mischief, leaving the scene of a personal injury accident and resisting arrest.

Sheriff’s Investigator Sandra Harper said in a probable cause affidavit presented in district court Tuesday that Patrol Sgt. Courtney Kelly and his K-9 Soder were with Tri-County Drug Task Force Investigators Cody Musselwhite and Joseph O’Neal when they attempted to conduct a traffic stop on a GMC Denali driven by Evans who they knew had active felony warrants for his arrest on Jan. 21.

Evans fled at high speed, running a stop sign at Blake and Burnett Streets and causing an accident that resulted in injuries to three people and an estimated $3,000 damage to the vehicle. The pursuit continued on Arkansas 365 and White Hall Police attempted to block the road at its intersection with Baldwin Road.

Evans hit the police car, causing it to spin around off the roadway and resulting in $26,000 in damage. Officers and deputies had to forcefully remove Evans from his vehicle and he continued to resist, even after a Taser was used. Kelly deployed his K-9 and Evans was taken into custody.

Harper reported that Evans was not questioned because he asked for an attorney,

Records at the prosecutor’s office showed that Evans is scheduled to stand trial in March on charges of aggravated residential burglary, aggravated robbery, theft of property and two counts of second-degree battery stemming from a case in 2017. He also has charges including second-degree battery pending in Pulaski County.

The Public Defender’s Office was assigned to represent Evans.
