Career Cluster Camp slated for high school students Wednesday

Jefferson County Career Coaches will host a Career Cluster Camp, an event designed to encourage students to prepare and pursue careers in emerging fields.

The one-day learning experiences are conducted throughout the state. Locally, the camp will be held at the Pine Bluff Convention Center and Ramada Plaza on Wednesday from 8:30 a.m. until 1:30 p.m.

High school students will have an opportunity to explore a variety of career options. Careers highlighted will include health science, arts and information technology as well as law and public safety. Students will hear from professionals who will discuss what they do and how they got into their chosen career field. Students will also be able to participate in hands-on activities and further explore their own career goals.

There is no charge to attend the event. Lunch is provided at the camp and students will also receive free giveaways. More than 300 students from White Hall, Dollarway, Watson Chapel, Pine Bluff and McGehee will participate.

In 2010, Gov. Mike Beebe’s Arkansas Works Initiative provided school districts in 21 counties with career coaches. Local coaches are employed through Southeast Arkansas College and work with students in grades 8–12 to encourage them to continue their education at the post-secondary level.
