Cards edge Bulldogs at CAC

NORTH LITTLE ROCK — It had been years since Dollarway and White Hall last met on the basketball court, but Saturday’s reunion brought back the intensity.

Jamal Burton scored 20 points in helping Dollarway escape with a 52-48 victory on the final day of the Central Arkansas Christian Classic. The Cardinals (8-1) led 38-31 going into the fourth quarter, but saw White Hall (3-3) make a charge to lead 44-42 before Dollarway came through with a late run of its own.

“We got some steals late and they turned the ball over,” Dollarway assistant coach Booker Mays said. “We made a free throw or two down the stretch.”

Jaelin Scott added 14 points, and Jonathan Liddell and Nathan Nowden each added six for the Cardinals, who have won four straight since an overtime loss to Fort Smith Southside on Monday.

Bulldogs coach Joe Stacey said his club played hard while missing one of its key players inside. Percy Arnold (15 points) and Nathan Lee (12) led the Bulldogs.

“We played pretty well,” Stacey said. “We got in foul trouble early. … We were playing one man short on the inside.”

Neither Stacey nor Mays could recall the last time Dollarway and White Hall played each other in basketball.

Both teams have other rivalry games coming up. Dollarway travels to Pine Bluff on Monday, and White Hall will play at Sheridan on Tuesday.
